The Airports Authority of India (AAI) is set to introduce an online system that will monitor airport projects in real time through CCTV feeds, drone visuals, videos and other digital inputs. The system, which has been in development for about a year, is expected to launch in the coming weeks and is aimed at improving oversight and reducing delays. AAI currently has around 25 projects underway, each costing between INR 200 crore and INR 500 crore. AAI and its PPP partners together have recorded capex of more than INR 96,000 crore since 2019-20.
The Airports Authority of India (AAI), responsible for airport development and air traffic services across the country, is preparing to introduce an online monitoring system designed to track project progress in real time. An AAI official indicated that the platform has been under development for close to a year and will be launched in the coming weeks. The objective is to ensure more accurate supervision of airport infrastructure work and reduce the chances of delay during execution.
The system will compile inputs from CCTV cameras, drone-captured visuals, videos and other site-level data. These tools will allow AAI teams to observe ongoing work without depending only on physical site visits or manual progress reports. This shift is expected to make coordination smoother, especially for projects spread across different regions.
AAI currently has around 25 airport projects in progress, with each requiring capital spending of INR 200 crore to INR 500 crore. As mentioned in the civil aviation ministry's latest annual report, AAI spent more than INR 6,400 crore in capex between Jan 1, 2024 and Mar 31, 2025. The authority manages 137 airports, which include 24 international airports, 10 customs airports, 80 domestic airports and 23 domestic civil enclaves.
In a recent update to the Lok Sabha, the civil aviation ministry stated that from 2019-20 to 2024-25, AAI and its PPP partners have undertaken capex exceeding INR 96,000 crore for airport development, upgradation and modernisation. These investments include airport expansion, terminal upgrades, runway strengthening and other infrastructure improvements across the network.
The planned online monitoring system builds on AAI's wider efforts to improve project management. Earlier methods relied heavily on periodic site inspections and manual documentation, which often made it harder to identify bottlenecks early. The new approach aims to strengthen internal supervision by enabling continuous access to verified on-ground information.
