Discussions involved private companies and CPSEs, focusing on innovation, operational excellence, indigenous technologies, and modern mining methods. Officials highlighted India's rising steel consumption driven by infrastructure projects and Odisha's advantages for industrial growth, underscoring the sector's critical role in supporting national development.
Union Minister H D Kumaraswamy emphasized the need for increased investment in research and development along with the adoption of technologies like artificial intelligence (AI) to drive the growth of India's steel sector. He made these remarks while inaugurating a two-day 'Chintan Shivir' in Bhubaneswar, attended by Union MoS Steel, Bhupathiraju Srinivasa Varma.
The minister highlighted the importance of leveraging technologies such as AI, machine learning, and digitalization to improve competitiveness and operational efficiency in the steel industry. He also underlined that sustained investment in research and development, combined with collaborative efforts among all stakeholders, is crucial for strengthening India's steel sector.
The event, hosted in mineral-rich Odisha, brought together senior industry leaders and stakeholders to brainstorm on the future direction of India's steel industry. The gathering aimed to provide a platform for collaboration, strategic alignment, and discussions on enhancing the domestic steel sector's role in nation-building.
Bhupathiraju Srinivasa Varma noted that steel remains the backbone of India's infrastructure development and is central to the country's journey towards a developed and modern economy. Sandeep Poundrik, Secretary of the Ministry of Steel, stressed the importance of deliberating on sector developments, addressing challenges, and planning for the future, in line with the Prime Minister's vision.
Poundrik highlighted that participation of private companies alongside central public sector enterprises (CPSEs) can facilitate the sharing of best practices. He further mentioned India's unique growth in steel consumption, largely driven by infrastructure spending, and encouraged CPSEs to adopt new technologies led by their in-house talent.
Hemant Sharma, Additional Chief Secretary for Industries, pointed out that Odisha's mineral-rich and coastal geography provides a strategic advantage for establishing and developing industries, including steel.
During the first day of the 'Shivir,' sessions focused on technology-driven innovation, operational excellence, indigenous technologies, and modern mining methods. Discussions revolved around upgrading infrastructure, expanding production capacity, and ensuring efficiency across the sector.
The deliberations included representatives from CPSEs such as SAIL, NMDC, MOIL, MECON, and MSTC, as well as domain experts from INSDAG, ISCA, BISAG, and private industry leaders including TATA Steel and JSW.
