The Maharashtra government has approved an allocation of INR 290 crore to expand Kolhapur Airport. As part of the expansion, approximately 30.25 hectares of land will be acquired. This includes land required for both the runway extension and the realignment of the Kolhapur-Hupari state highway. A portion of the budget - around INR 4.8 crore - has been earmarked for rehabilitating a residential colony affected by the land acquisition.
The existing runway, currently 1,930 metres long, will be extended to 2,300 metres in the near term. There is also a long-term plan to stretch it further to 3,000 metres, which would enable the airport to handle larger passenger or cargo aircraft.
In addition to the runway work, the project includes diverting a section of the Kolhapur-Hupari road. This realignment is part of the broader scheme to ensure that the airport's expansion does not disrupt road connectivity and supports better transport links.
This expansion is being carried out jointly by the Maharashtra government and the Airports Authority of India (AAI), reflecting a shared vision to scale up the airport's capacity and improve regional connectivity.
