Synopsis

The Maharashtra government has approved an allocation of INR 290 crore to expand Kolhapur Airport. The funds will be used to acquire about 30.25 hectares of land both to extend the runway and to divert the Kolhapur-Hupari state highway. A portion of the funding is earmarked for rehabilitating a nearby residential colony. The runway is planned to be extended from its current length to 2,300 metres, with a long-term goal of reaching 3,000 metres, enabling the airport to accommodate larger aircraft.

The Maharashtra government has granted administrative and financial sanction for a INR 290 crore expansion of Kolhapur Airport. This significant investment signals a firm commitment to upgrading the airport's infrastructure.

As part of the expansion, approximately 30.25 hectares of land will be acquired. This includes land required for both the runway extension and the realignment of the Kolhapur-Hupari state highway. A portion of the budget - around INR 4.8 crore - has been earmarked for rehabilitating a residential colony affected by the land acquisition.

The existing runway, currently 1,930 metres long, will be extended to 2,300 metres in the near term. There is also a long-term plan to stretch it further to 3,000 metres, which would enable the airport to handle larger passenger or cargo aircraft.

In addition to the runway work, the project includes diverting a section of the Kolhapur-Hupari road. This realignment is part of the broader scheme to ensure that the airport's expansion does not disrupt road connectivity and supports better transport links.

This expansion is being carried out jointly by the Maharashtra government and the Airports Authority of India (AAI), reflecting a shared vision to scale up the airport's capacity and improve regional connectivity.

With INR 290 crore now sanctioned, Kolhapur Airport is poised to evolve into a more capable and commercially significant aviation hub. The runway extension and road realignment will not only boost the airport's operational capacity but also enhance its strategic importance in the region. Moreover, by rehabilitating affected residents, the project underscores a commitment to inclusive infrastructure development. As this expansion takes shape, Kolhapur's connectivity and economic prospects stand to benefit substantially.
