Nashik's Ozar Airport is set for a major INR 556 crore expansion in preparation for the upcoming Simhastha Kumbh Mela, scheduled from October 2026 to July 2028. The project includes constructing a new integrated terminal building, which will raise the airport's passenger capacity from 300 to 1,000 per hour. The Maharashtra government will sign a Memorandum of Understanding with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) to execute the work, which the divisional commissioner has directed to be completed by March 2027. Ancillary facilities will also be upgraded to handle increased traffic.
Nashik's Ozar Airport, located about 20 km from the city, is undergoing a significant expansion with administrative approval from the Nashik?Trimbakeshwar Kumbh Mela Development Authority. This upgrade, costing INR 556?crore, is part of preparations for the Simhastha Kumbh Mela, which will take place from October 2026 to July 2028.
The airport, currently maintained by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), will see the construction of a new integrated terminal building and ancillary facilities. Once complete, the terminal will increase passenger handling capacity from 300 to 1,000 per hour, allowing the airport to manage the surge of visitors during the Kumbh.
The authority's chairman, who also serves as the Nashik divisional commissioner, has set a completion deadline of March 2027. To formalize the project, a Memorandum of Understanding will be signed between HAL and the state government.
Officials noted that the upgrade will include improvements to the existing terminal and surrounding infrastructure. Local industry representatives had previously highlighted the need for such expansion, emphasizing that the current facilities would be insufficient for the expected crowds.
The airport expansion is part of wider infrastructure enhancements in Nashik ahead of the Kumbh, including road connectivity improvements. These measures aim not only to handle the large influx of pilgrims but also to strengthen the city's long-term civil aviation and transport capacity.
