The first phase of Thiruvananthapuram International Airport's redevelopment under Project Anantha is moving forward on schedule, backed by about INR 600 crore. The work focuses on airside upgrades such as drainage improvements, apron redevelopment, and new support buildings. Terminal 1 has already received its canopy and additional parking space. A separate INR 136.31 crore plan for a city-side commercial and hospitality hub is close to securing environmental clearance. Meanwhile, the expansion plan for Terminal 2 is being revised after regulatory delays and is currently under review.
Thiruvananthapuram International Airport is recording steady progress in the first phase of redevelopment under Project Anantha. Nearly INR 600 crore has been allocated for this phase, which focuses mainly on strengthening airside facilities. Key components include upgrading drainage and cable systems, redeveloping the aircraft apron, and constructing essential utilities such as a power substation, a gate complex, and a new fire and rescue station.
The construction work is being executed by ITD Cementation India, with ULCCS serving as a subcontractor. On the passenger side, the installation of the canopy at Terminal 1 has been completed, and the parking area has been expanded to accommodate more vehicles.
Project Anantha forms part of a wider INR 1,300 crore plan to raise the airport's handling capacity from the current 3.2 million passengers per year to nearly 12 million. Future phases will include building a new air traffic control tower, aircraft hangars, and a knowledge centre.
Alongside these improvements, a major city-side development planned at Chackai is progressing toward approval. The Union environment ministry's Expert Appraisal Committee has recommended environmental clearance for the INR 136.31 crore project. The proposal includes a 240-room five-star hotel, a 660-seat dining and convention facility, retail areas, and supporting amenities spread across about 33,900 sq m.
The proposed building incorporates sustainability measures such as rainwater harvesting, recycled-water systems, a sewage treatment plant, and dedicated waste-management facilities. It is planned to include two basements, a ground floor, and four upper floors, with a height of around 23 metres.
At the same time, the master plan for Terminal 2 expansion is undergoing revision. The earlier environmental application had to be updated after administrative changes in the approval committee. The revised plan has been submitted to the Union environment ministry, and approvals are expected to take a few more months before construction can begin.
