The Union Finance Ministry has approved INR 8,300 crore for Odisha's Rameshwar-Paradip coastal highway, with significant progress already made in land acquisition. The highway, stretching 346 km from Digha in West Bengal to Rameshwar in Khorda, will have a four-lane section up to Konark and two lanes beyond. Delays occurred due to previous alignment changes, while political concerns have been raised over lane reductions. Once Cabinet clearance is received, NHAI will issue construction tenders. The project is expected to boost regional connectivity and infrastructure development.
Odisha's Works Minister, Prithiviraj Harichandan, announced that the Union Finance Ministry has approved INR 8,300 crore for the Rameshwar-Paradip coastal highway project. He mentioned that about 60 to 70 percent of the land required for the project has already been acquired.
Harichandan added that the Ministry's Appraisal Committee has approved the alignment of the route from Rameshwar to Paradip. The project still awaits the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs' clearance, after which the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) will issue tenders for construction.
The highway will feature a four-lane stretch from Rameshwar to Konark and a two-lane road from Konark to Paradip. The full 346-km route will ultimately connect Digha in West Bengal to Rameshwar in Odisha's Khorda district, with the first phase covering 160 km up to Paradip.
The project has faced delays over the years, mainly due to multiple alignment changes during the previous BJD government. BJD spokesperson Lenin Mohanty expressed concerns over the reduction of certain sections from four lanes to two lanes, noting that it could lead to higher environmental, social, and economic costs in the future. He emphasized that the party will continue advocating for timely and resilient infrastructure and will work to ensure the highway is completed at full capacity.
