Synopsis

SAIL's Rourkela Steel Plant is set for a major expansion, aiming to increase its capacity to 9.8 million tonnes per year. The expansion includes a new 1 MTPA slab caster built at INR 1,100 crore and ongoing construction of a coke oven battery and pellet plant. The project supports critical sectors like defence, oil and gas, and automobiles. Earlier, RSP was India's first public sector steel plant, starting operations in 1959 with German collaboration and an initial 1 MTPA capacity. The expansion aligns with the government's 300 MT national steel target.

Union Steel Minister HD Kumaraswamy recently announced a significant capacity expansion plan for the Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) under Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL). The plan aims to double the plant's production to 9.8 million tonnes per annum, highlighting its growing role in supporting key sectors like defence, oil and gas, and the automobile industry.

During his visit, Kumaraswamy inaugurated a modern steelmaking facility at RSP and a 1 MTPA slab caster built with a capital expenditure of around INR 1,100 crore. He also reviewed the progress of the new coke oven battery and the pellet plant currently under construction. The minister noted that Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has pledged full support to meet Prime Minister Modi's target of achieving 300 million tonnes of steel capacity nationally.

Rourkela Steel Plant, located approximately 320 km from Bhubaneswar, was India's first public sector steel plant. Established in the 1950s with German collaboration, it initially had a production capacity of 1 million tonne. The plant became operational in 1959 when President Rajendra Prasad lit the first blast furnace, Parvati. Today, SAIL's total steelmaking capacity stands at 20.30 million tonnes per annum, with RSP contributing 4.4 million tonnes.
