Synopsis

The Andhra Pradesh government has directed officials to ensure that all beneficiaries under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) receive BEE star-rated, energy-efficient appliances through a programme being implemented with Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL). The distribution includes LED bulbs, LED tube lights and BLDC fans covering nearly six lakh households. The initiative is expected to reduce annual power consumption by more than 10 million kWh and lower household expenses. The state has previously partnered with EESL across multiple sectors, strengthening its ongoing shift toward energy-efficient public infrastructure.

The Andhra Pradesh government has asked its Housing Department to work with Energy Efficiency Services Limited to ensure that households under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana receive BEE star-rated, energy-efficient appliances. The instructions were issued earlier this week as part of a broader push to make state-supported housing more economical and energy conscious.

The distribution plan covers around six lakh households and includes four LED bulbs, six LED tube lights and two BLDC (brushless direct current) fans for each eligible family. The programme is planned to be completed by 2026 and forms part of what officials describe as one of the largest energy-efficiency initiatives taken up in the housing sector. The government expects the effort to help households reduce electricity consumption by an estimated 10.24 million kWh every year, along with a notable reduction in expenses, expressed in crores of INR annually.

During a recent regional conference in Hyderabad, the Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister appreciated Andhra Pradesh for its consistent work in improving urban services and for successfully implementing a large LED street-lighting programme in urban areas. The state has already installed close to ten lakh LED streetlights, which has played a role in lowering power use in public spaces. State officials also highlighted earlier MoUs signed with EESL across housing, urban local bodies, MSMEs and tourism, which have helped streamline several energy-efficiency projects.

The state's housing and tourism special chief secretary added that financial support continues for certain categories: eligible SC and BC households receive up to INR 50,000 in assistance, while more vulnerable tribal groups receive up to INR 1 lakh under related state schemes. This is in addition to the planned appliance distribution. The government has previously undertaken programmes to introduce energy-efficient devices in housing and other public infrastructure, including earlier LED bulb and fan distribution drives.

These combined efforts indicate that the state has been working steadily toward integrating cost-efficient and power-saving measures into its housing initiatives, aiming to reduce long-term electricity use in both households and public systems.
