Maharashtra's infrastructure committee has approved major highway upgrades, including a new multi-lane Pune-Shirur corridor spanning 53.4 km with a mix of four-lane roads and a six-lane elevated expressway. The route, which sees heavy industrial traffic, is expected to ease growing congestion in the Pune region. Two six-lane highways in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district were also cleared, linking Shendra, Bidkin and Dhoregaon as part of planned DMIC and Samruddhi Expressway connectivity. A greenfield road from Karmad to the expressway also received initial approval. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis directed immediate repairs, fast-tracked land acquisition and timely execution, with a 7.4-km elevated stretch to be jointly developed for metro and road use.
In a meeting held earlier this week, the Maharashtra cabinet's infrastructure committee approved a proposal for constructing a multi-lane highway linking Pune with Shirur, while also clearing two major highway projects in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district. The committee met under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, according to an official communication.
The Pune-Shirur national highway project, spanning 53.4 km, is planned as a combination of a four-lane road and a six-lane elevated expressway. The corridor has historically witnessed very heavy vehicular movement due to multiple industrial estates situated along the stretch. Officials noted that the project will help accommodate rising traffic linked to industrial expansion in the Pune metropolitan region.
Additionally, two six-lane highway projects in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district received clearance: a 32.8-km link from Shendra Industrial Estate to Bidkin Industrial Estate and a 26-km stretch from Bidkin to Dhoregaon, which will integrate with the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar-Pune highway. Both stretches form part of earlier-planned connectivity upgrades under the DMIC and Samruddhi Expressway influence zones.
The committee also granted in-principle approval for a new greenfield road that will connect the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar-Jalna DMIC Node at Karmad to the Samruddhi Expressway through Bidkin, aimed at improving industrial and freight mobility in the region.
During the meeting, Fadnavis instructed concerned officials to undertake urgent repairs on the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar-Ahilyanagar road. He emphasised that the Pune-Shirur corridor must be completed within the next three years and insisted that the schedule should move ahead without any delays. He further noted that construction should begin immediately, keeping in view the expected increase in vehicular volume.
The chief minister also directed that land acquisition for the Shendra-Bidkin and Bidkin-Dhoregaon segments be fast-tracked. The meeting was attended by Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar, Revenue Minister Chandrasekhar Bawankule, Public Works Minister Shivendrasinh Raje Bhosale, and Chief Secretary Rajesh Kumar.
As part of the upgraded Pune-Shirur plan, a 7.4-km elevated corridor will be developed in coordination between the Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation and the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation to accommodate both metro and road infrastructure. This co-development model has been discussed in earlier infrastructure proposals to support multi-modal connectivity across high-traffic routes.
