Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) is preparing to start commercial passenger services on December 25. The airport will begin with 23 daily departures and will operate between 8 am and 8 pm for the first month. During this phase, it has been planned to handle up to 10 aircraft movements per hour. Airlines including IndiGo, Air India Express and Akasa Air will operate flights to 16 domestic destinations in the initial schedule.

The airport has been developed by Navi Mumbai International Airport Pvt Ltd (NMIAL), a public-private partnership between the Adani Group and CIDCO. It is the second major airport for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region and was formally inaugurated earlier this year. The project has been built at an estimated cost of INR 19,650 crore.

Phase-1 spans 1,160 hectares and includes one terminal and one operational runway, providing an annual handling capacity of 20 million passengers. Around 120 aircraft movements per day are expected in the early months, with operations planned to increase gradually. From February 2026, the airport will shift to round-the-clock operations, with daily departures expected to rise to 34.

Officials have stated that the airport has been designed with provisions for future phases that will significantly expand capacity to meet long-term demand. Earlier planning documents indicate that full development could enable the airport to handle as many as 90 million passengers per year once multiple terminals, runways and integrated transport systems are completed.

The airport layout includes a lotus-inspired terminal design and has planned future connectivity through road, metro and rail links. Cargo capacity is also intended to increase with the expansion of later phases, allowing the airport to support both passenger and logistics growth within the region.
