Synopsis

India and Nepal have formalized a direct rail link along the Jogbani-Biratnagar route for containerised and bulk cargo. The agreement, executed through a Letter of Exchange amending the Treaty of Transit, allows goods to move from Kolkata and Visakhapatnam ports to Nepal's Morang District customs yard. Key corridors, including Kolkata-Jogbani and Visakhapatnam-Nautanwa, are included, aiming to boost multi-modal trade and Nepal's commerce with third countries. The deal underscores India's role as Nepal's largest trade partner and is expected to reinforce economic and commercial ties.

India and Nepal have agreed to establish a direct rail connection along the Jogbani-Biratnagar route to enable the movement of containerised and bulk cargo. This connection will allow goods to be transported from the ports of Kolkata and Visakhapatnam directly to the Nepal Customs Yard in Morang District, near Biratnagar.

Both nations exchanged a Letter of Exchange (LoE), which amends the protocol to the existing Treaty of Transit between India and Nepal. According to the commerce ministry, this agreement will support rail-based freight movement between Jogbani in India and Biratnagar in Nepal, including bulk cargo under a broader definition.

The updated arrangement also covers key transit corridors, including Kolkata-Jogbani, Kolkata-Nautanwa (Sunauli), and Visakhapatnam-Nautanwa (Sunauli). These routes are expected to enhance multi-modal trade connectivity, not only between India and Nepal but also in terms of Nepal's trade with third countries.

The LoE exchange took place during a bilateral meeting between India's Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal and Nepal's Minister for Industry, Commerce, and Supplies Anil Kumar Sinha. The commerce ministry noted that India continues to be Nepal's largest trade and investment partner, holding a significant share of its external trade.

The ministry added that these measures are anticipated to strengthen economic and commercial ties between the two countries further, while also benefiting regional trade networks.
