The Airports Authority of India’s high-frequency radar at Dahisar in Mumbai will be relocated to Gorai, a move set to free up around 1,000 acres of land across 6 km for affordable housing projects. The decision, agreed upon by the Civil Aviation Ministry, Maharashtra government, and other stakeholders, aims to overcome building height restrictions imposed by radar installations in Dahisar and Juhu. Over the next five years, an estimated 50,000 homes are expected to be constructed or redeveloped, improving housing availability, urban infrastructure, and employment opportunities in North Mumbai.
The Airports Authority of India’s (AAI) high-frequency radar at Dahisar in Mumbai is set to be shifted to Gorai, enabling the development of hundreds of acres for affordable housing projects, Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu announced. This step follows discussions between the Civil Aviation Ministry, Maharashtra government, and other stakeholders to address urban development constraints in the area.
Naidu said the ministry will seek cabinet approval for the relocation, allowing construction work on housing projects to begin promptly. Radar installations at Dahisar and Juhu currently limit building heights, constraining redevelopment in these suburbs.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis earlier informed the legislative assembly that the state government had decided to move the high-frequency radar centres from Dahisar and Juhu to technically suitable alternative sites. He added that the Centre and the AAI had agreed to the Dahisar relocation, with the state offering to bear the costs and provide alternate land.
Naidu highlighted that the delay had impacted urban development in North Mumbai, forcing many residents to live in older, unsafe buildings. He stated that with this decision, the residents of Dahisar will finally have access to homes of their own. Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, representing North Mumbai, had actively engaged with the Civil Aviation Ministry to expedite the matter.
The radar relocation work will proceed with cooperation from all stakeholders, including the Union and state governments. Naidu mentioned that approximately 1,000 acres of land spread over six kilometers will be released for housing projects, positioning Dahisar as a new hub for affordable living. He noted that the decision balances aviation safety with housing requirements, offering relief to thousands of families and supporting regional economic growth.
Goyal said the plan will result in the construction or redevelopment of around 50,000 homes over the next five years, providing proper housing with basic amenities and generating significant employment. He emphasized that this outcome was achieved through years of consistent follow-up and close coordination between the Centre and the state. Goyal also recognized CM Fadnavis for promptly providing alternative land.
Fadnavis added that the Gorai land will be transferred to the Centre free of cost, and 40 percent of AAI land at Dahisar will be repurposed for public use. An alternative site at Juhu has also been suggested to the AAI for technical evaluation, and once finalized, the approval process for relocating the Juhu radar will begin.
After the radar centres are relocated, redevelopment in Dahisar and Juhu (DN Nagar) will become feasible, enabling urban growth and improving housing options in these areas. With these developments, Dahisar is expected to shed its image as the “last suburb” and emerge as a fast-growing residential hub, offering safe, green, and affordable living for residents.
