Synopsis

Tamil Nadu has achieved double-digit economic growth driven largely by sustained infrastructure development and large-scale job creation, Finance and Environment Minister Thangam Thennarasu said in Chennai. Speaking at the inauguration of the Vels Trade and Convention Centre and Vels Film City in Poonamallee, he said infrastructure-led investments have strengthened the state's economy and generated direct and indirect employment. The minister highlighted the role of private sector participation in supporting growth, citing investments in convention, trade and film infrastructure. He noted that under Chief Minister M K Stalin's leadership, Tamil Nadu recorded 11.19 per cent growth, supported by projects that boost jobs, real estate activity and allied industries.

Tamil Nadu has recorded double-digit economic growth primarily due to large-scale job creation arising from sustained infrastructure development across the state, Finance and Environment, Climate Change Minister Thangam Thennarasu said at an event in Chennai. Addressing the gathering during the inauguration of the Vels Trade and Convention Centre and Vels Film City in Poonamallee, the minister said infrastructure-led investments had played a critical role in strengthening the state's economic performance.

Referring to observations made by Vels University Founder Chancellor Ishari K Ganesh, Thennarasu noted that Tamil Nadu's double-digit growth had been achieved under the leadership of Chief Minister M K Stalin. He said this growth was closely linked to employment generation resulting from various infrastructure projects that have been established across the state in recent years. According to the minister, such projects have not only enhanced physical infrastructure but have also created direct and indirect employment opportunities, contributing to overall economic momentum.

Thennarasu said the private sector continued to play a vital role in supporting Tamil Nadu's growth trajectory. While Ganesh represents the education sector, the minister observed that his investment in trade, convention and film infrastructure demonstrated how private enterprises could meaningfully contribute to the state's economy. He added that facilities such as large convention centres and film cities would further stimulate job creation and attract ancillary economic activity.

The minister recalled that in August, Chief Minister M K Stalin had stated that under the Dravidian Model of governance, Tamil Nadu's economic growth had risen to 11.19 per cent, marking a new high for the state. Thennarasu also spoke about the entrepreneurial journey of Ganesh, noting that he had started with a modest educational institution operating out of rented premises before building a large trade and convention centre along with an expansive film city spread across several acres in Sembarambakkam, Poonamallee. He added that Ganesh had established 54 educational institutions, collectively educating over 51,000 students across a wide range of disciplines.

The event was also addressed by actor and parliamentarian Kamal Haasan, who said his long association with Ganesh dated back to their introduction by former Chief Minister M G Ramachandran. Haasan highlighted the significance of the newly inaugurated 20-floor studio at the Vels Film City, describing it as one of the largest studios in Asia. He said Chennai had long been a centre for pan-India film-making, noting that while Hindi cinema largely focused on a single language, films originating from southern India had traditionally reached audiences across linguistic boundaries. Haasan also urged Ganesh to consider setting up a dedicated film institute alongside the film city to further nurture talent.

Union Finance Minister Smt Nirmala Sitharaman and Union Minister of State L Murugan were scheduled to attend the event but were unable to do so, it was formally announced at the venue.
