Synopsis

Canada saw a slight increase in its household debt-to-income levels in the past quarter, reflecting the continued pressure on families from borrowing costs and slower income growth. The debt-to-income ratio inched up to 174.8%, indicating that households owed nearly 1.75 times their disposable income. National net worth recorded a modest rise to about CAD 19.38 trillion, although per capita net worth dipped to around CAD 462,747. These movements highlight ongoing financial strain on individual households despite overall national balance sheets remaining stable.

Canada recorded a small increase in its household debt-to-income ratio in the recent quarter, moving up to 174.8% from the revised level of 173.9% in the previous quarter. This measure shows that Canadian households continued to carry higher debt compared to their disposable income, reflecting persistent pressure from borrowing and living costs.

Statistics Canada reported that the country’s national net worth saw a marginal improvement, reaching around CAD 19.38 trillion. However, when measured per person, national net worth slipped to roughly CAD 462,747, indicating that the overall gain did not translate equally across the population.

The rise in the debt-to-income ratio follows past quarters where elevated interest rates and inflation-weighted spending have influenced household finances. Previous data has shown similar trends, with families facing higher mortgage payments and credit burdens as economic conditions remained tight. The latest figures again point to a gap between broad national wealth and the financial load carried by individual households.
