A new double-lane steel bridge over Chhapar Nallah in Jammu & Kashmir’s Ramban district has been completed, providing smoother travel for residents who faced regular disruptions during rains. Built by the General Reserve Engineering Force, the 45-metre long and 12-metre wide structure cost INR 9 crore, supported by INR 4 crore for approach roads. The bridge links Ramban with the Gool–Sangaldan region and nearby Mahore in Reasi district. It is also expected to support passengers using the Sangaldan railway station and improve access for around 150,000 residents.
A new steel bridge over Chhapar Nallah in the Sangaldan area of Gool tehsil in Jammu & Kashmir’s Ramban district has been completed, marking an important upgrade for local road connectivity. The structure, built by the General Reserve Engineering Force, spans 45 metres in length and 12 metres in width. The construction cost stood at INR 9 crore, while the approach roads on both sides required an additional INR 4 crore for roughly half a kilometre of access.
Chhapar Nallah has long posed challenges for commuters, especially during rains, when the water level rose and cut off the link between Ramban and the Gool–Sangaldan area, as well as Mahore in neighbouring Reasi district. Travelling difficulties often affected patients, students, employees, and daily wage earners who relied on this route. Many residents had to wait for hours or take longer and more difficult roads when the nallah overflowed.
A taxi driver from the area shared that heavy rainfall would often bring traffic to a halt, with travellers stranded for a day or more. He noted that people lost working hours and faced uncertainty each time the road was blocked. He welcomed the completion of the bridge, adding that the community expects steady movement even during adverse weather.
The Chairperson of the District Development Council in Ramban said the nallah had remained a major bottleneck on the road connecting the district headquarters with Gool and Mahore, directly affecting the daily needs of nearly 150,000 residents. She mentioned that people previously crossed the stretch on foot during strong water flow, which sometimes led to injuries or damage to vehicles.
Connectivity in the region is also linked to the Sangaldan railway station, located around 10 kilometres from the new bridge. Officials believe the upgraded link will help railway passengers access the area more smoothly. They also expect the improved road network to support tourism potential in the Gool valley and Sangaldan region, which are known for their natural landscape.
In recent years, Ramban district has seen other road improvements, including new tunnels and viaducts on the Jammu–Srinagar highway designed to reduce travel disruptions. The new steel bridge over Chhapar Nallah adds to these efforts and supports the broader goal of ensuring safer and more reliable road infrastructure across the hilly terrain.
