Surat Municipal Corporation fined a contractor INR 5 lakh at the Dumas Seaface project for failing to implement dust control and waste management measures. The action is part of a broader inspection of 266 construction sites across the city, of which 184 were penalised, totalling INR 56 lakh. Key violations included missing shade nets and improper debris disposal, with Varachha and Sarthana zones most affected. The crackdown aims to enforce pollution norms across Surat’s construction sector, ensuring safer air quality and cleaner urban surroundings.
Surat authorities have imposed a fine of INR 5 lakh on a construction contractor at the Dumas Seaface project after municipal inspectors found inadequate dust control and waste management measures at the site. The Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC), under Municipal Commissioner Shalini Agarwal, noted that the site lacked proper systems to prevent dust spread and managed construction waste poorly.
This penalty comes amid a wider city-wide inspection drive, where officials checked 266 construction projects across Surat. Of these, 184 sites were found non compliant, with total penalties reaching INR 56 lakh, including INR 44 lakh collected on the first day itself.
Most violations were linked to the absence of mandatory shade nets and improper disposal of construction debris. The Varachha and Sarthana zones were the most affected, reflecting the dense construction activity in these areas. Municipal authorities have also warned contractors involved in public infrastructure projects that they will face similar fines if pollution control standards are not strictly followed.
SMC officials emphasized that consistent enforcement of these norms is crucial for controlling dust pollution and maintaining air quality in Surat, especially in fast-developing residential and commercial zones. Developers have been urged to adopt proper dust control systems and effective waste-management practices to avoid penalties and ensure safer living conditions for local residents.
