Synopsis

Assam has approved 3,25,234 new rural households under PMAY-G and handed over their sanction letters at a state-level event in Boko, Kamrup district. The latest batch adds to earlier distributions, including 5 lakh approvals in mid-2022, instalments released across 2022 and 2023, and nearly 3.9 lakh sanction letters issued earlier this year. With geo-tagging of eligible homes completed, the state will prepare updated beneficiary lists through gram sabhas. The move is meant to help economically weaker families gain safe rural housing with better access to welfare schemes.

Assam has handed over sanction letters to 3,25,234 rural families under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G). The distribution took place at a state-level event in Boko, Kamrup district, where Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the scheme is meant to support families with limited income by helping them build permanent homes.

This announcement follows several earlier phases of the scheme in the state. In mid-2022, the government had approved 5 lakh beneficiaries. First instalments were released to 2 lakh families soon after, and another 3 lakh received instalments in early 2023. A large milestone was also recorded in mid-2023, when more than 3 lakh families were handed over their completed homes on a single day.

Earlier this year, the state distributed 3,88,358 sanction letters in another major phase of PMAY-G. The latest set of approvals now adds to Assam's ongoing effort to close the rural housing gap in a structured and continuous manner.

According to the state administration, geo-tagging of eligible homes has already been completed. Updated beneficiary lists will now be prepared through gram sabhas to include families who may have been left out in earlier rounds due to technical issues during surveys. Officials said this will help ensure wider coverage and reduce the number of households still waiting for approval.

The Chief Minister said the scheme gives families a sense of relief and dignity by helping them move from temporary structures to pucca homes. He also mentioned that poor families receive other welfare benefits worth about INR 3,000 each month across various programmes and encouraged households to use their savings to strengthen their children's education.
