Chhattisgarh’s railway development has received a major push, with the annual allocation rising from an average INR 311 crore a decade ago to INR 6,925 crore for 2025–26. Track expansion has also picked up, moving from only 32 km between 2009 and 2014 to 1,189 km commissioned since 2014. The state currently has 26 sanctioned projects covering 1,932 km, with over 1,000 km already completed. Several doubling and third-line works have recently been finished, while major new-line projects continue. The Railways has also conducted extensive surveys to map future needs.
The Indian Railways has significantly expanded its financial support for Chhattisgarh’s rail network, raising the allocation to INR 6,925 crore for the 2025–26 financial year. This is a substantial increase compared with the earlier average annual allocation of INR 311 crore between 2009 and 2014. The information was shared by the Ministry of Railways in Parliament, highlighting the central government’s ongoing focus on improving rail connectivity in the state.
Railway expansion in Chhattisgarh has accelerated in recent years. Between 2009 and 2014, the state added only 32 km of new track, averaging just 6.4 km annually. In contrast, the period from 2014 to 2025 saw the commissioning of 1,189 km of track, taking the annual average to more than 108 km. This marks an improvement of over fifteen times in the pace of construction.
Currently, 26 projects including six new lines and twenty doubling or multitracking works — have been sanctioned. These projects collectively cover 1,932 km at an estimated cost of INR 31,619 crore. More than 1,000 km of this network has already been commissioned, and expenditure on these works has reached INR 16,325 crore by the end of the past financial year.
Several key projects have been completed recently. These include the Kharsia–Dharamjaigarh new line stretching 100 km, the 203 km Raipur–Titlagarh doubling, the 26 km Salka Road–Khongsara doubling and the 31 km Durg–Rajnandgaon doubling. Other completed works include 72 km of doubling between Khodri and Anuppur along with a flyover at Bilaspur, the 110 km third line between Bilaspur and Urkura, the 152 km third line on the Champa–Jharsuguda route, and the 50 km Pendra Road–Anuppur third line.
Several other major projects remain under construction. These include new-line works such as Dallirajhara–Rowghat, Rowghat–Jagdalpur, Gevra Road–Pendra Road and Dharamjaigarh–Korba. Doubling and multitracking continue on important sections including Kirandul–Jagdalpur, Jagdalpur–Koraput, the fourth line between Jharsuguda and Bilaspur, the third line on Rajnandgaon–Nagpur, the Boridand–Ambikapur doubling and the fifth and sixth lines between Kharsia and Parmalkasa.
