The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation has launched a special dust-control and road-cleaning drive to address rising winter pollution. Acting on Commissioner Dr. Kailas Shinde's instructions, ward-level engineering and sanitation teams began intensive cleaning on 25 November. The operation includes mechanical brushing, debris removal, road-washing with processed water and footpath cleaning. Over 50 tonnes of dust and debris have already been cleared from 52 major roads covering more than 50 km. Key corridors such as Palm Beach Road, Thane-Belapur Road and the Turbhe APMC stretch have received priority cleaning. With jetting machines, sweepers, foggers and 250 workers deployed daily, the campaign also enforces pollution norms at construction, quarry and RMC sites, contributing to improved AQI levels.
The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation has undertaken a special dust-control and road-cleaning mission in response to increased particulate concentration witnessed during the winter season. As per Commissioner Dr Kailas Shinde's instructions issued in a review meeting, the campaign commenced on 25 November, mobilising ward-level engineering teams and sanitation officers to carry out targeted anti-pollution measures.
The civic teams are executing deep-cleaning activities that include mechanical brushing of road surfaces, collection and transportation of deposited silt, soil and construction debris, spraying of processed water for road-washing, and cleaning of footpaths. Since the launch of the initiative, more than 50 tonnes of dust, soil and debris have been removed, and intensive cleaning has been undertaken across 52 major roads spanning over 50 km.
In addition to routine daily cleaning, the corporation is prioritising key corridors such as Amra Marg, Thane-Belapur Road, MIDC's Gavli Dev Road, Palm Beach Road, the Koparkhairane-Ghansoli stretch, CIDCO Exhibition Centre Road, Turbhe APMC corridor, the route near Nerul Police Station, the stretch from CIDCO Bhavan to Sion-Panvel flyover, Sanpada's Jaipur School vicinity, and several arterial roads in Rabale MIDC and Airoli. These routes have undergone comprehensive dust removal and road-washing.
To support the operation, the corporation has deployed eight jetting machines, three mechanical sweeping vehicles, three ENCAP fogger vehicles and 120 flipper machines. More than 250 sanitation workers are on duty daily in two shifts, ensuring uninterrupted implementation of the drive. Roads cleaned of dust are subsequently washed using jetting and mechanical sweeping systems to ensure a more effective suppression of airborne particles.
Alongside road cleanliness, ward-level teams are inspecting ongoing construction sites to verify compliance with pollution-control norms. Any deviations are attracting penalties, and sites failing to implement mandated measures are being instructed to halt operations. Similar directives have been issued for stone-quarry units and ready-mix concrete plants operating within the municipal limits.
The dust-control and deep-cleaning mission is being conducted across the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation area on a continuous basis, and officials have noted visible improvement in the Air Quality Index as a result of these efforts. With sustained deployment of manpower and mechanised systems, the campaign is expected to continue through the winter months to maintain better ambient air quality across the city.
