Mumbai is set to launch the initial sections of two major metro lines on December 31, according to officials from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA). The operational stretches include a portion of Metro Line?9 between Dahisar East and Kashigaon, and a segment of Metro Line?2B from Diamond Garden to Mandale in Chembur. These openings form the first phase of the respective metro lines and are expected to enhance connectivity across key suburbs.
Metro Line?9, an extension of Line?7, is a 13.58?km elevated corridor connecting Dahisar East with Mira-Bhayandar. Its safety clearance is currently under review by the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS), and once approved, MMRDA expects the corridor to be inaugurated on the scheduled date. Metro Line?2B, running from DN Nagar to Mandale in Mankhurd, is undergoing trial runs on its first 5.3?km stretch between Mandale and Diamond Garden.
Both stretches are expected to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on December 31. MMRDA also plans to open the second phase of Line?2B, covering the route from DN Nagar to Saraswat Nagar in Khar, by next summer. This will leave only the central section between Saraswat Nagar and Diamond Garden pending. Once completed, Line?2B will span 23.6?km with 20 stations, providing an important east-west link across the city. The launch of these corridors is expected to reduce road congestion, provide faster travel across suburban areas, and further integrate Mumbai's growing metro network.
