Synopsis

Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has continued its heightened pollution-control measures through the past week as air quality across cities deteriorated during the winter season. Acting under the directions of Municipal Commissioner Dr Kailas Shinde, the corporation has deployed dedicated teams to inspect construction sites, quarries, and RMC plants, ensuring adherence to pollution-control norms. Officials also conducted cleanliness drives at major sites, issued notices to 86 construction projects, and initiated strict dust-control procedures. The use of treated wastewater for road washing and fogging has helped conserve potable water while improving the city's AQI.

Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has kept its intensified air-pollution control efforts underway through the past week as winter-related pollution levels rose across urban centres. Acting on instructions from Municipal Commissioner Dr Kailas Shinde, the civic body began implementing stringent measures earlier this week and has maintained continuity, resulting in visible improvement in the city's Air Quality Index (AQI).

A major focus has been placed on addressing dust emissions from ongoing development works. For this purpose, zone-wise teams-comprising engineers, sanitation officers and sanitation inspectors-were formed to physically inspect construction sites, quarry belts and cement-based RMC plants. These teams have been verifying strict compliance with pollution-control guidelines.

The initiative is being carried out under the supervision of Additional Commissioner Sunil Pawar, with guidance from City Engineer Shirish Ardavad, Assistant Director of Town Planning Somnath Kekan and Deputy Commissioner of Solid Waste Management Dr Ajay Gadade. The respective ward officers and assistant commissioners have been overseeing field operations.

Teams from the town planning department, along with engineers, inspected 86 construction sites in the past week. Notices were issued to developers for adhering to standard operating procedures (SOPs), and officials indicated that any lapses found during subsequent inspections would attract penalties and a week-long work stoppage.

Maintaining cleanliness at and around construction sites has also been prioritised, given its direct impact on dust levels. The Solid Waste Management Department has been conducting deep-cleaning drives, including one held earlier this week at the Goodwill Construction site in Turbhe MIDC. Workers manually swept streets with brush brooms, collected accumulated soil and transported it away. Roads and adjoining areas were then cleaned using jet-spray vehicles with processed water. Goodwill's labourers were also involved in the exercise, and penal charges were recovered from the concerned contractor.

In parallel, large-scale dust-mitigation campaigns have been undertaken along major roads, where heavy traffic contributes to particulate matter. Soil deposited along kerbsides is being removed using wire-brush brooms and flipper machines, followed by immediate collection and transportation. After clearing the dust, roads are washed using sprinkler and jet-spray vehicles deploying treated wastewater. Additionally, ENCAP dust-suppressor foggers are being used to spray fine mist into the air, enabling airborne particles to settle. Notably, all washing and fogging activities utilise recycled water from an advanced sewage treatment facility, thereby conserving potable water.

Commissioner Dr Kailas Shinde has directed all concerned departments to remain vigilant and carry out these measures consistently. The corporation noted that these concerted efforts have already contributed to better AQI readings across Navi Mumbai.
