The Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation (GMC) has extended the property tax rebate window to the end of December, allowing homeowners to continue availing a 20% concession. This marks the second extension in the current financial year, following the earlier deadline that expired in the past week. From January, the rebate will reduce to 10%, fall further to 5% in February, and discontinue entirely from March, when penalties will be imposed. The extension comes amid public unease and a pending High Court challenge linked to the earlier property tax hike, even as GMC targets substantial progress towards its INR 600 crore revenue goal.
The Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation has pushed the deadline for its property tax rebate scheme to the end of December, enabling homeowners to continue receiving a 20% concession for timely payments. This decision follows an earlier deadline that lapsed in the past week, making this the second extension granted in the ongoing fiscal year.
Officials stated that the rebate structure will progressively reduce after December, with a 10% concession offered through January and 5% in February. Residents who miss these timelines will face penalties starting March, as the rebate will no longer be applicable.
The civic body's move comes against the backdrop of controversy surrounding a property tax hike introduced at the start of the financial year. Although GMC rolled back the increase earlier this year following objections from councillors, tax notices continued to be issued based on the revised rates. This discrepancy prompted a former councillor to challenge the hike before the Allahabad High Court, contending that municipal regulations permit revisions only once every two years.
More than 5.5 lakh properties fall under Ghaziabad's tax net for the present fiscal period. The state government has set a collection target of INR 600 crore, with GMC aiming to meet at least 80% of this goal. So far, around INR 160 crore has been collected under property tax heads.
A senior GMC official conveyed that the extension was intended to provide taxpayers with additional breathing space, especially given the ongoing dispute and residents' concerns about the abrupt issuance of notices. The civic body expects the revised timeline to improve compliance rates while allowing homeowners to settle dues without immediate penalties.
GMC's decision to prolong the rebate window reflects an effort to maintain taxpayer confidence while balancing its fiscal responsibilities. By spacing out rebate reductions and delaying penalties, the municipal body aims to encourage regularisation of dues without causing further friction amid an already sensitive tax environment. However, with the legal challenge still pending, uncertainty remains regarding the validity of the previous hike and its long-term implications. The extended timeline now offers both residents and the administration a temporary buffer until clarity emerges from the judicial review.
