Synopsis

The Gujarat government has cleared a long-pending infrastructure request from Moddar, a remote village in Porbandar district. Through the state's Swagat grievance platform, villagers had sought a direct road and a bridge to Kutiyana city, as their existing route required travelling nearly 20 km through multiple villages and remained unusable for most months due to flooding. The state has now sanctioned INR 9 crore for a minor bridge, a culvert and a 3-km road between Moddar and Pasvari. The decision is expected to improve travel for students, farmers and patients.

The Gujarat state government has taken up an important connectivity concern raised by residents of Moddar village in Porbandar district. The village, which has around 1,200 people, has struggled with limited road access for years. Through the Swagat platform, villagers conveyed that they lacked a direct route to Kutiyana city and were dependent on a nearly 20 km detour passing through four villages.

During the recent Swagat session, farmers such as Lakhman Moddara explained that over 100 farmers owned land across a river and often had to cross it using makeshift means, which created safety risks. They also pointed out that the river remains flooded for about eight months each year, making the route functional for only a short period. This affected school travel, agriculture work and medical emergencies.

After hearing these concerns, the state sanctioned INR 9 crore for the needed work. The approved project includes a minor bridge, a culvert and a 3-km road stretch linking Moddar to Pasvari village. Officials have been instructed to execute the work quickly to ensure year-round access.

Villagers shared that within a few days of submitting their grievance, they were informed that the funds had been approved. For a small village in the Ghed region, where regular flooding disrupts routine travel, this was seen as a significant step. Local residents believe the new road and bridge will reduce long detours, remove dependence on unsafe river crossings and make travel smoother for students, farmers and patients.

Reports from other local sources have also highlighted that the Swagat programme has resolved several rural grievances in recent months, including infrastructure-related requests. The Moddar case is being viewed as another example of the administration's focus on addressing essential connectivity needs in remote areas.
