Synopsis

UPMRC has announced a strategic plan to build a 1,575 km metro network across Uttar Pradesh by 2047, focusing on expansions in Lucknow, Kanpur, and Agra while introducing new corridors in Noida-Greater Noida, Varanasi, and Prayagraj. Several other districts will also receive metro lines to strengthen inter-city connectivity. The initial 525 km phase requires INR 1,040 crore annually, with 790 km planned for completion by 2035. Leveraging its strong track record, UPMRC aims to enhance urban transport efficiency and support long-term sustainable development.

The Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) has laid out a long-term plan to develop a 1,575 km metro network across the state by 2047. The plan focuses on expanding existing metro systems in Lucknow, Kanpur, and Agra, with proposed extensions of 225 km, 200 km, and 100 km respectively. These cities, already operational hubs, are expected to serve as anchors for the broader state network.

In addition to these expansions, the plan includes new corridors in Noida-Greater Noida, Varanasi, and Prayagraj, each measuring around 150 km. Other districts, such as Gorakhpur, Ayodhya, Meerut, and Jhansi, are expected to receive metro lines of approximately 50 km each. The network aims to cover both major urban centers and developing districts, supporting future urban growth and improving inter-city connectivity.

UPMRC plans to complete roughly 790 km of the metro network by 2035. The first 525 km of expansion is projected to require an annual state contribution of INR 1,040 crore. The corporation's managing director stated that the plan builds on UPMRC's established record of operational efficiency and timely project delivery. Past projects in Tier-2 cities have shown strong efficiency and cost management, which adds credibility to these ambitious targets.

The project also emphasizes integration with existing transportation infrastructure to ensure seamless connectivity across the state. The metro expansion is expected to reduce traffic congestion, lower travel time, and promote sustainable urban transport. With phased development, the plan provides a clear roadmap for the next two decades, aiming to position Uttar Pradesh as a leader in urban mobility among Indian states.
