The Warangal railway manufacturing unit is under construction and expected to be completed in 2026. Built over 160 acres with INR 521 crore invested in its first phase, the facility is being constructed using sustainable methods and advanced technology. It will produce 16-20-car MEMU rakes for short and medium-distance travel. Officials expect it to strengthen railway manufacturing capacity, generate jobs, and support ancillary industries. During inspection, the minister also reviewed related projects such as a planned airport, a textile park and a heritage-area tourism scheme.
Construction of the railway manufacturing unit (RMU) at Warangal is proceeding as planned and is expected to be fully completed next year. The facility will spread over 160 acres, and the first phase involves an investment of INR 521 crore. The construction uses sustainable methods and advanced technology, and will be fitted with modern machinery.
The RMU will initially produce modern MEMU (Mainline Electric Multiple Unit) rakes of 16-20 cars. These rakes are meant to support short- and medium-distance travel across the country. Once operational, the facility is expected to strengthen the railway manufacturing capacity, support growth in the railway sector, and generate significant employment for local youth. This could also boost ancillary industries in the region.
During his recent visit to Warangal via a Vande Bharat train, G Kishan Reddy inspected the site and described the RMU as a 'game-changing project' for the region, noting that work is progressing with both speed and scale. He also reviewed other central-government projects under way in the area: a tourism development plan around the Bhadrakali temple, efforts to acquire land for a proposed Warangal airport, and the development of the Kakatiya Mega Textile Park.
The unit's construction follows earlier groundwork: foundation-laying had been done two years ago, and the transformation of an earlier plan for a wagon-repair workshop into a full manufacturing unit was seen as part of a wider push to boost domestic rolling-stock production.
