Synopsis

Pictures of a surface crack on Haiderpur flyover in Delhi circulated on social media, prompting immediate action from the PWD. The department said the crack resulted from minor settlement due to box-pushing work underneath, part of the Mukarba Chowk underpass project, and assured that structural integrity remained unaffected. Repairs were completed on the same day, restoring traffic flow. This incident highlights routine surface damages during construction operations and reinforces the need for ongoing structural audits on ageing flyovers to maintain safety while supporting city infrastructure upgrades.

A few days ago, netizens shared pictures showing a large crack on the Haiderpur flyover along Delhi's Outer Ring Road, attracting immediate attention. The Public Works Department (PWD) said the crack appeared on the road surface above the flyover near Haiderpur Badli metro station due to minor settlement caused by ongoing 'box-pushing' activities underneath the structure. These activities are part of construction work for the underpass at Mukarba Chowk. Officials emphasized that such surface cracks have been observed before during box-pushing operations and do not affect the structural integrity of the flyover, as the damage was limited to the top filled portion of the road.

The PWD acted quickly and carried out repairs on the same day. Traffic flow was restored soon after, ensuring commuters faced minimal disruption. The flyover serves thousands of vehicles daily, making prompt intervention essential. Earlier this year, PWD had conducted structural audits on several ageing flyovers in Delhi, identifying minor surface damages and planning maintenance or rehabilitation as needed. These audits are part of ongoing efforts to ensure long-term safety while supporting active infrastructure development, such as underpass and road expansion projects across the city.
