Engineers India Limited (EIL) has entered into a new agreement with the Dangote Group to act as the Project Management Consultant and EPCM consultant for the second train of the Dangote Refinery. This follows EIL's earlier work on the first 6,50,000 bpd train, which was commissioned last year and is recognised as one of the world's largest single-train refinery units. The upcoming expansion will increase the facility's refining capacity to 1.4 million bpd by 2028 and will include a new PDH unit to significantly scale up polypropylene output, supporting Africa's fuel and petrochemical requirements.
Engineers India Limited has formalised an understanding with the Dangote Group to oversee project management and EPCM responsibilities for the second train of the Dangote Refinery. This move marks another milestone in the expansion of Africa's largest refining and petrochemical complex located at the Lekki Free Zone.
The agreement builds on EIL's earlier role in executing the first 6,50,000 barrels per day train of the integrated refinery, which entered operation last year. That facility has since been recognised globally as one of the largest single-train refinery units and is widely seen as a major contributor to Africa's evolving energy framework.
Under the new engagement, EIL will take up project management and engineering, procurement, and construction management tasks for the refinery's next phase. The expansion aims to increase total refining capacity to 1.4 million bpd by 2028, a scale that would place the complex among the world's most extensive refinery setups.
According to the company's statement, EIL noted that the renewed partnership reflects the consistency built during the first train's development. It conveyed that the ongoing collaboration stands on mutual trust and the technical capabilities demonstrated in the earlier phase.
The second train will include a new PDH unit, which is expected to raise polypropylene production from 8,30,000 tonnes annually to 2.4 million tonnes. This enhancement is projected to strengthen the supply of fuels and petrochemicals across the region and lower dependency on imports.
Once the expansion is completed, the Dangote complex is expected to become the largest refinery at a single location globally, with added capacity intended to bolster Africa's fuel security and industrial output.
Aliko Dangote, President of Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals FZE, conveyed that the ongoing partnership represents the group's continued confidence in EIL. He referred to EIL's earlier execution as highly professional and stated that the second train further demonstrates their sustained capabilities.
EIL's Chairperson and Managing Director, Vartika Shukla, stated that the partnership highlights international trust in India's engineering strengths. She pointed out that the upcoming capacity expansion stands among the world's largest refinery developments and will be supported by complementary large-scale industrial facilities.
EIL, operating under the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas, has previously executed major projects across refining, petrochemicals, fertilisers, and renewables. The Dangote Group, operating in 17 countries, remains one of Africa's largest industrial conglomerates.
