Synopsis

THDC India Ltd is progressing toward full commissioning of its 1,000-MW pumped storage project at Tehri, with the final two units planned for activation in December 2025 and January 2026. Two units were already brought online earlier this year, strengthening the project's role in improving grid stability. Built at an estimated cost of INR 8,339 crore, the project uses the Tehri and Koteshwar reservoirs for water recycling between peak and off-peak hours. Once fully operational, the Tehri hydro power complex will reach an installed capacity of 2,400 MW, including existing hydro assets.

THDC India Ltd is advancing the commissioning work for its 1,000-MW pumped storage project (PSP) in Tehri, Uttarakhand, which is among the country's larger hydro-based storage systems. The project, constructed at an estimated cost of around INR 8,339 crore, consists of four units of 250 MW each under the Tehri hydro power complex.

Two units were brought into operation earlier this year-one in early June and the second in early July marking a significant step toward completing the project. A senior company official shared that the remaining third and fourth units are planned for commissioning in December 2025 and January 2026, placing the project in its final phase of operational readiness. The company has also stated that the overall commissioning work has entered the last stage.

The Tehri PSP uses the existing Tehri and Koteshwar reservoirs as the upper and lower basins, enabling a closed-loop water transfer system. Water is pumped from the lower to the upper reservoir during off-peak hours using reversible machines. The same machines generate electricity during peak demand by releasing the stored water back to the lower basin.

The company highlighted that this system helps address the variability of renewable energy by offering dependable load balancing, frequency stabilisation and support during peak power requirements. Such storage-based flexibility has become increasingly important as more solar and wind power is integrated into the grid.

With the completion of the PSP, the Tehri hydro power complex will expand to an installed capacity of 2,400 MW. THDC already operates the 1,000-MW Tehri hydro power project and the 400-MW Koteshwar hydro electric project as part of the same complex. The company, a subsidiary of NTPC and headquartered in Rishikesh, also manages additional thermal and renewable assets across Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat and Kerala.
