Synopsis

The Ghaziabad Development Authority has fined two builders INR 20,000 each for violating environmental norms by storing construction materials in the open at sites in New Panchawati Colony and Vijaynagar. The rules, under GRAP-3 and NGT directives, prescribe higher fines for larger plots and stricter measures for sites above 500 sqm, including UPPCB registration, dust audits, and camera monitoring. These actions are part of a wider GDA crackdown on illegal construction and pollution, though residents highlight continued dust and infrastructure issues that require coordinated civic efforts.

The Ghaziabad Development Authority (GDA) has recently penalised two developers for storing construction materials in the open, a clear violation of construction and demolition (C&D) waste rules and the National Green Tribunal (NGT) directives under GRAP-3 guidelines. The violations were observed at construction sites in New Panchawati Colony and the Vijaynagar area. Each builder has been fined INR 20,000 for failing to comply with the environmental and safety norms.

According to the rules, open storage on a plot exceeding 100 sqm can attract fines, which increase depending on the area involved up to INR?50,000 for plots up to 500 sqm and as high as INR 5 lakh for plots over 20,000 sqm. Sites larger than 20,000?sqm are also required to install PTZ cameras for monitoring, while those above 500 sqm must register with the Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board (UPPCB) and undergo regular dust control audits.

GDA officials noted that this enforcement is part of broader measures to control environmental pollution caused by construction activity. The authority has also instructed builders to follow preventive measures such as water sprinkling on construction sites, mechanised street sweeping, and deployment of anti-smog guns in pollution prone areas.

This move is part of a wider enforcement initiative by GDA. In recent months, the authority demolished illegal constructions covering approximately 60,000?sqm and identified hundreds of unauthorised colonies in Ghaziabad for action. These steps indicate a sustained effort to regulate construction activities and enforce compliance with environmental standards across the city.
