The long-awaited redevelopment of Rajaji Nagar in Thiruvananthapuram is set to begin its first phase under the National Smart Cities Mission. The initial block, costing INR 9 crore, features 32 two-bedroom apartments of about 600 sq ft each and is ready for opening next month. Designed for expansion up to six floors, the project will eventually house 48 families. Spread across 12.6 acres, the larger redevelopment will upgrade drainage, roads, parking, and community spaces. Despite earlier delays and relocation challenges, around 20 families have already moved into temporary housing. The project marks a key step toward modernising Rajaji Nagar while preserving its long-established community fabric.
The redevelopment of one of the city's oldest and most densely settled colonies, Rajaji Nagar in Thiruvananthapuram, will see its first phase roll out imminently under the National Smart Cities Mission. The initial block, comprising 2 BHK apartments each measuring approximately 600 sq ft, has been constructed at a cost of about INR 9 crore and is now undergoing final finishing touches such as plastering and painting. SCTL officials indicate that the structure is ready for opening next month.
Designed to accommodate 32 families across four storeys, the building has been engineered to allow two additional floors in the future, increasing capacity to 48 families. The wider scheme covers some 12.6 acres and currently houses about 2,000 families living in around 1,100 dwelling units. Upgraded infrastructure will include improved storm-water drainage, proper access roads, parking facilities and community spaces to modernise the estate.
The first batch of residents comprises approximately 20 families who were displaced for construction and have already moved into temporary accommodation; another 12 families are set to join them. The project had encountered delays earlier due to tendering issues, resident resistance concerning beneficiary lists and relocation concerns. Initially, SCTL had targeted relocating 189 families in the first stage, but community feedback led to a reduction in that number.
With works substantially advanced and relocation underway, the upcoming hand-over marks a significant step in the rehabilitation of Rajaji Nagar. By introducing modern living units and infrastructure within the existing footprint, SCTL aims to enhance the living conditions of long-standing residents while preserving community continuity. While subsequent phases will determine the full scale of transformation, this first block establishes a blueprint for the estate's rejuvenation and sets the ball rolling for more comprehensive redevelopment ahead.
