The Public Works Department (Delhi) (PWD) recently authorised the construction of five new foot overbridges (FOBs) at key locations across Delhi to enhance pedestrian safety and ease vehicular congestion. The planned sites include near the exit of Old Delhi Railway Station, at Uttam Nagar East Terminal, by the Hanuman Mandir on Ring Road, at the Mehrauli-Mahipalpur signal near TPM Church, and adjacent to Kendriya Vidyalaya JNU on Vedant Deshika Marg. A feasibility study has also been commissioned to assess further pedestrian crossing needs.
The PWD has given green light for five new foot overbridges in Delhi, aiming to enhance pedestrian safety and improve traffic flow in areas with high footfall and vehicular movement. The locations selected are SPM Marg near the exit of Old Delhi Railway Station, Uttam Nagar East Terminal, Hanuman Mandir on Ring Road near Parmanand Hospital, TPM Church at the Mehrauli-Mahipalpur signal, and a site near Kendriya Vidyalaya JNU on Vedant Deshika Marg.
A senior PWD official explained that the bridges are "key to making Delhi's roads safer for pedestrians,- noting that many stretches-especially in west Delhi-see substantial pedestrian movement due to residential clusters, markets and metro access. In Uttam Nagar, for instance, Pankha Road begins at the terminal and connects to Najafgarh Road and the Blue Line of the metro, running through Janakpuri and merging with the Outer Ring Road at Dabri Mor. The corridor offers access to Palam, Dwarka, IGI Airport and Delhi Cantonment, and features dense residential areas and high market activity, making pedestrian crossings particularly critical.
The FOB near Old Delhi Railway Station is intended to provide safe passage for the thousands of commuters navigating the area outside the station, thereby reducing risk of accidents in one of the busiest transit zones in the city. The department has engaged a consultant who will undertake topographic surveys, map existing utilities, and record pedestrian and vehicular flows over a five-day period. Based on that data, two to three conceptual designs will be prepared followed by a detailed feasibility report.
Additionally, the department has directed that permissions be obtained from the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) for advertisements on FOBs, underpasses and flyovers, and that memoranda of understanding (MoUs) be signed with PSUs and private firms under their CSR programmes for maintenance. All new FOBs and underpasses will also undergo aesthetic enhancements through painting and beautification measures.
With the approval of these five strategically located foot overbridges, the PWD has taken a proactive step in addressing pedestrian safety and traffic flow challenges in Delhi's dense urban corridors. The forthcoming feasibility study and conceptual design phase promise a data-driven approach to infrastructure investment, while the incorporation of advertising and CSR maintenance models underscore a growing trend of public-private coordination. The success of this initiative will depend on timely execution, regular maintenance and seamless integration with existing commuter infrastructure.
