Singapore to allocate 300 hectares on Jurong Island for green energy projects

Synopsis

Singapore has allocated about 300 hectares of land on Jurong Island's western side for renewable energy projects and low-carbon fuel production, and an additional 20 hectares for the country's largest data centre park with a capacity of up to 700 megawatts. The initiative, led by the Economic Development Board (EDB) and JTC Corporation, aims to strengthen Singapore's clean-energy ecosystem and support digital infrastructure growth. The move aligns with national goals under the Singapore Green Plan 2030 to promote sustainable industrial growth and lower carbon emissions.

The Economic Development Board (EDB) and JTC Corporation announced that roughly 300 hectares of land on Jurong Island's western sector will be set aside for renewable-power installations and production of low-carbon fuels. This area represents about 10% of the island's total land area. In addition to this, 20 hectares have been earmarked for the development of Singapore's largest data-centre park, designed with a capacity of up to 700 megawatts.

Jurong Island, covering about 3,000 hectares and hosting Singapore's major energy and chemicals industries, houses two of the country's three major refineries. It has long served as a manufacturing and petro-chemical hub. The latest land-allocation decision signals an expansion of its role into renewable-energy production and digital-infrastructure support.

According to Minister-in-charge of Energy, Science & Technology Tan See Leng, the island is intended to become a global test-bed for new energy and low-carbon technologies. Facilities to be scaled up include solar power, sustainable aviation fuel, low- or zero-carbon ammonia solutions for power generation and maritime bunkering, hydrogen-ready power plants and battery-storage infrastructure. Operators of the new data-centre park will be able to tap Jurong Island's existing ecosystem shared energy-storage and utility infrastructure, ample power supply and access to emerging low-carbon energy sources.

Meanwhile, the island's effort to diversify continues: there is growing interest from specialty-chemicals companies in Singapore, driven by rising regional demand for higher-quality products. Within that frame, Sembcorp Industries announced it has piloted a vertical battery-stacking solution at its existing energy-storage facility on Jurong Island, raising its capacity from 285 MWh to 326 MWh without increasing the physical footprint.

In past years, Jurong Island had already committed to sustainability goals: since 2021 it has been transforming into a sustainable energy and chemicals park under the Singapore Green Plan 2030. For example, a tender was awarded to deploy solar installations over 60 hectares and rooftops on the island, raising its solar-capacity to 142.2 MWp enough to power more than 33,400 four-room Housing-Board flats annually. The new land-allocation reinforces and accelerates those earlier efforts.
