The Public Works Department (PWD) has started work on a detailed feasibility study for a proposed integrated transit corridor along SSN Marg in South Delhi's Chhatarpur area. The corridor, covering a stretch of about three kilometres from the Anuvrat Marg junction to DLF Farms, is planned to include a flyover, slip roads, and either an underpass or a foot-over-bridge. The project aims to ease persistent congestion caused by heavy traffic towards Gurugram and the airport. The feasibility report is expected to be completed within six months.
The Public Works Department (PWD) has begun a detailed feasibility study for constructing an integrated transit corridor along SSN Marg in Chhatarpur, South Delhi. The corridor will span nearly three kilometres, starting from the Anuvrat Marg junction and extending up to DLF Farms. This initiative seeks to address the long-standing issue of traffic congestion on the stretch, which connects key routes leading towards Gurugram, Vasant Kunj, Mehrauli, and the Indira Gandhi International Airport.
According to officials, the proposed corridor will consist of a flyover, service lanes, and either an underpass or a foot-over-bridge to facilitate smoother vehicular and pedestrian movement. The PWD has already issued a tender to appoint a consultant who will prepare the feasibility report, assessing the technical and structural requirements of the project.
Traffic movement on this stretch is often slow, even during non-peak hours, due to irregular road width and encroachments. Although the road's designated right of way is nearly 100 feet, its functional width has reduced to about 27-30 metres in several parts because of commercial establishments, temporary structures, and encroachments along the edges. The study will include a detailed survey of these existing conditions to plan suitable widening and redesign measures.
The feasibility assessment will involve mapping buildings, encroachments, trees, permanent features, signage, and other structures along the route. It will also examine environmental, social, and economic aspects through a cost-benefit analysis. Officials mentioned that a metro line runs parallel to the proposed corridor, and therefore, the new infrastructure will need to be designed to integrate smoothly with the metro alignment without affecting its structure.
The plan for this corridor was first discussed when the PWD Minister visited the Chhatarpur constituency earlier this year following requests from the local MLA. During the visit, instructions were issued to explore measures to ease congestion in the locality and improve road connectivity.
Once the consultant submits the report, expected within six months, the department will finalise the design and move towards seeking approvals for construction. Officials indicated that the corridor could play a vital role in improving connectivity in South Delhi and reducing travel time between Chhatarpur and adjoining areas such as Vasant Kunj and Gurugram.
