Synopsis

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami reviewed the Banbasa modern land port project, calling it a key initiative to strengthen India-Nepal trade and regional development. The project, led by the Land Ports Authority of India (LPAI), has received over INR 500 crore for its first phase, with all environmental and land clearances completed. Construction began after approval for diverting 84 acres of forest land. The land port will integrate customs, security, and trade agencies in one complex, improving efficiency and transparency. Strategically located to boost formal trade and local employment, the project marks a major step toward enhanced connectivity, infrastructure, and cross-border cooperation in Uttarakhand.

During a site inspection of the modern land port project in Banbasa, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Shri Pushkar Singh Dhami remarked that the development would serve as a crucial driver for strengthening trade relations and fostering cooperation between India and Nepal, while also promoting the socio-economic development of the border regions. The project, being implemented by the Land Ports Authority of India (LPAI), has received approval of more than INR 500 crore for its first phase of construction.

The Chief Minister mentioned that the LPAI, with the active support of the Uttarakhand government, was advancing the project at a rapid pace. He noted that all formalities related to environmental clearance, compensatory afforestation, and land transfer had been completed. Construction activities have been moving forward since the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change granted final approval for the diversion of nearly 84 acres of forest land earlier this year.

Dhami further stated that the modern land port would provide an integrated, convenient, and secure framework for both trade and passenger movement between India and Nepal. He added that all key agencies linked to customs, security, trade, and border management would operate within a unified complex, ensuring greater efficiency and transparency in cross-border operations.

He pointed out that the Banbasa Land Port's strategic location would not only facilitate formal trade in agricultural and industrial goods but also generate employment opportunities for the local youth, thereby strengthening the regional economy.

The Banbasa land port project, backed by significant investment and governmental support, represents a major step towards enhancing connectivity and trade between India and Nepal. With all necessary approvals in place and construction progressing steadily, the facility is expected to streamline border management, improve infrastructure, and create fresh livelihood opportunities in the Champawat region, marking a milestone in Uttarakhand's development and regional cooperation efforts.
