Synopsis

During the Rahsta Expo held recently at the Jio World Convention Centre, Mumbai, Dr Sanjay Mukherjee, IAS, Metropolitan Commissioner of MMRDA, emphasised that roads are not merely infrastructure assets but the foundation of economic expansion. He discussed how integrated transport networks, strategic mega projects, and stakeholder efficiency would collectively drive the Mumbai Metropolitan Region's (MMR) evolution into a global urban centre and contribute to the goal of achieving a USD 1 trillion economy by 2047.

At the Rahsta Expo held earlier this month, Dr Sanjay Mukherjee, IAS, Metropolitan Commissioner of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), noted that roads represent far more than physical infrastructure, describing them as the backbone of growth with an immense multiplier effect.

He pointed out that projects such as the Mumbai Coastal Road, the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link, the expanding Mumbai Metro network, and the 'Mumbai in Minutes' initiative are redefining regional connectivity. Dr Mukherjee shared insights into how the authority is developing an integrated transport network combining roads, metros, and ring roads to create a cohesive mobility system across the region.

He also mentioned transformative projects like the proposed Vadhavan Port and the broader vision for a Third Mumbai, both of which are expected to play a vital role in decentralising growth. According to him, MMRDA's master plan, encompassing 31 strategic projects, aims to position the Mumbai Metropolitan Region as a USD 1 trillion economy by 2047.

Emphasising collaboration, Dr Mukherjee underlined the importance of contractors, suppliers, and overall operational efficiency in ensuring timely and effective delivery of these initiatives. He remarked that as Mumbai transitions from its historic identity into a neo-urban global city, every stakeholder must contribute meaningfully to this developmental journey.

The Rahsta Expo served as a platform for MMRDA to present its comprehensive roadmap for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region's transformation. Dr Mukherjee's address reflected a vision of coordinated infrastructure development driven by innovation, integration, and collaboration. With mega projects underway and a clear economic goal in place, Mumbai's journey towards becoming a global metropolis continues to gain momentum, supported by both public and private sector participation.
