Power Grid Corporation of India (POWERGRID), a government-owned transmission utility, has acquired two major projects worth INR 3,375 crore to expand and strengthen the country's power transmission network. The new projects Vindhyachal Varanasi Transmission Limited and SR WR Power Transmission Limited were secured through tariff-based competitive bidding. These projects aim to ease congestion in existing transmission corridors, enhance grid reliability, and improve renewable energy transfer across regions while also supporting power evacuation from future pumped storage projects across India.
Power Grid Corporation of India, the state-owned power transmission company, has recently acquired two key transmission projects valued at INR 3,375 crore. The acquisition is aimed at improving the country's electricity transmission infrastructure, ensuring smoother power flow, and strengthening inter-regional grid connectivity. These projects are expected to help decongest heavily loaded transmission corridors and enhance the overall reliability of the power network.
The company stated that the projects would also assist in evacuating electricity from upcoming pumped storage plants, supporting India's clean energy expansion and grid stability goals. These pumped storage systems play a vital role in balancing renewable energy supply and demand, making the new transmission routes essential for the future energy framework.
POWERGRID secured the two special purpose vehicles (SPVs) - Vindhyachal Varanasi Transmission Limited and SR WR Power Transmission Limited - through a tariff-based competitive bidding process. The Vindhyachal Varanasi Transmission Limited project was acquired from PFC Consulting Ltd last week for developing an inter-regional transmission system. The plan includes setting up a new 765 kV substation at Prayagraj and 765 kV transmission lines that will pass through Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh.
Similarly, the SR WR Power Transmission Limited project was taken over from REC Power Development & Consultancy Ltd around the same period. This project is designed to improve electricity transmission between the Southern Region (SR) and Western Region (WR) grids. It involves the construction of a 765 kV transmission line spanning Karnataka and Maharashtra, along with line bays at both terminal points.
POWERGRID explained that the southern transmission scheme will help integrate additional renewable energy potential in the southern states, particularly aiding the evacuation of power from Bidar Power Station (Bidar PS). The new line will also increase the import and export capacity of the SR grid, improving power exchange between regions and supporting renewable energy growth in the south.
As of the end of September, POWERGRID operates 286 substations, managing over 1,80,864 circuit kilometres of transmission lines and a total transformation capacity of 5,81,831 MVA. The company has consistently maintained one of the highest transmission system availabilities in the sector, recording more than 99.80% uptime. POWERGRID attributed this performance to the continued use of advanced technologies, automation, and digital monitoring tools across its operations.
