PMAY-U 2.0 also focuses on inclusivity, supporting vulnerable sections and promoting women's empowerment through joint or female-headed ownership of houses.
The Union Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry has given approval for the construction of more than 1.41 lakh additional houses under PMAY-Urban 2.0. With this latest sanction, the total number of houses approved under the scheme has crossed 10 lakh, reflecting the government's continued focus on providing affordable urban housing.
The new projects will be implemented across 14 states and Union Territories, including Assam, Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Jammu and Kashmir, Puducherry, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, Meghalaya, Haryana, Odisha, Uttarakhand, and Uttar Pradesh. These areas were identified based on their high housing needs and urban population growth, aiming to provide homes to economically weaker sections and low-income groups.
During a Central Sanctioning and Monitoring Committee (CSMC) meeting, chaired by Housing and Urban Affairs Secretary Srinivas Katikithala, the ministry highlighted the need for projects to be located in regions with adequate infrastructure, roads, and public transport, ensuring ease of living for beneficiaries. The committee also reviewed the progress of PMAY-U 2.0 and discussed strategies to improve the timely completion of houses.
PMAY-U 2.0 is designed to provide dignified living for eligible urban populations, focusing on inclusivity and equity. The scheme supports marginalized groups and vulnerable urban sections, aiming to improve their living standards through affordable pucca houses. It also promotes women's empowerment by facilitating house ownership in the name of female heads of households or through joint ownership arrangements.
This approval forms part of the government's ongoing effort to meet housing demands in urban India, reinforcing the broader objective of 'Housing for All.' By expanding affordable housing with adequate facilities, the initiative also contributes to creating socially inclusive urban communities.
