The Kochi Canal Rejuvenation Project, led by the Kochi Corporation with support from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and ICLEI South Asia, is advancing steadily with international backing. Renovation has begun on the Pandarachira Canal, with the Detailed Project Report funded at INR 4 crore and additional grants expected to exceed INR 10 crore. Bechtel will support the next phase before upcoming elections. The project aims to restore all city canals over five years, integrating clean water, sewage systems, flood management, mosquito control, tourism promotion, and improved connectivity.
The Kochi Canal Rejuvenation Project, initiated by the Kochi Corporation in partnership with UNEP and ICLEI South Asia, is moving forward with active international support. A workshop held in Delhi earlier this month formally launched the project, highlighting the restoration of the Thevara-Perandoor Canal as a priority. This initiative forms part of a larger plan to rejuvenate Kochi's historic canals and strengthen the city's sustainable development framework.
Renovation work has already started on the Pandarachira Canal, one of the key waterways in West Kochi. The Detailed Project Report (DPR) for this canal has received funding of INR 4 crore, with additional grants of at least INR 10 crore anticipated. International organizations, including Bechtel, are expected to assist in the next phase of work, which is planned to progress before the announcement of upcoming elections.
The project aims to revitalize all canals in Kochi over the next five years. Plans include establishing clean water supply and sewage systems, flood prevention measures, and mosquito control, while also promoting tourism. The initiative will integrate the canal network with inland water transport, improving connectivity and creating more sustainable urban infrastructure.
The Ministry of Urban Affairs and the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) have invited the Kochi Corporation to present the project at a funding agency workshop in Delhi on October 28. This platform is expected to attract additional financial and technical support, underlining the project's alignment with national and international sustainability goals.
The project also builds on previous local initiatives aimed at waterway management, pollution control, and urban resilience, strengthening the city's long-term strategy for canal-based development. By involving local communities and international agencies, the initiative is structured to ensure lasting benefits for both residents and the environment.
