The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC), in partnership with Project Mumbai and Mindspace REIT, has launched an innovative Navi Mumbai Plastic and E-Waste Recyclothon; to promote sustainable urban living. The initiative, involving over two lakh citizens across more than 200 locations, focuses on reducing plastic and e-waste through recycling and reuse. It aims to transform collected waste into usable public materials like benches, planters, and school supplies, while fostering behavioural change towards responsible waste management and advancing Navi Mumbai's vision of becoming a model sustainable city.
In a bid to enhance sustainable urban living, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation, in collaboration with Project Mumbai, has commenced the Navi Mumbai Plastic and E-Waste Recyclothon initiative. The programme seeks to curb plastic and e-waste generation while encouraging circular economy practices. Mindspace Business Parks (Mindspace REIT) has joined the effort under its corporate social responsibility framework, reaffirming its commitment to environmental stewardship.
During a meeting held earlier this week between Municipal Commissioner Dr Kailas Shinde, Project Mumbai CEO Shishir Joshi, and Mindspace REIT CEO Ramesh Nair, detailed discussions were held on the implementation of the Recyclothon to achieve the goal of a plastic-free Navi Mumbai. Additional Commissioner Sunil Pawar was also present. On this occasion, a T-shirt made entirely from recycled plastic bottles was unveiled.
The Recyclothon aims to bring about behavioural change and raise awareness about waste management. Covering over 200 locations, it plans to involve more than two lakh citizens, including residents, corporates, schools, and social organisations. Through this initiative, NMMC aims to achieve a No Waste to Landfill target and position Navi Mumbai as a leading example of sustainable urban development in India.
The collected plastic and e-waste will be repurposed into benches, planters, walking tracks, and educational materials, following the Three Rs principle Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. A notable feature of this drive is the creation of Zero Waste Gardens, developed entirely using recycled plastic waste to promote eco-friendly urban beautification.
Throughout the year, various awareness campaigns are to be conducted alongside coastal and mangrove clean-up drives, given Navi Mumbai's extensive coastline. Employees from Mindspace's Airoli business parks, along with volunteers and students, will actively participate in these activities. This collective movement for cleanliness and plastic reduction is expected to significantly contribute to Navi Mumbai's environmental goals.
Municipal Commissioner Dr Kailas Shinde expressed confidence that the Recyclothon initiative, supported by Project Mumbai and actively backed by Mindspace REIT, would accelerate the city's efforts towards cleanliness and a plastic-free environment. He further noted that with citizens cooperation and institutional collaboration, Navi Mumbai could emerge as one of India's leading environmentally conscious cities.
Project Mumbai CEO and Co-founder Shishir Joshi remarked that the initiative turns waste into opportunity, transforming discarded items into public-use materials with citizen participation. He added that this effort would strengthen the movement against environmentally harmful plastics.
Mindspace REIT CEO Ramesh Nair stated that as a corporate entity operating in one of the country's most advanced urban centres, Mindspace was proud to contribute actively to this initiative. He expressed confidence that the Recyclothon would play a pivotal role in shaping a sustainable future for Navi Mumbai and India alike.
Navi Mumbai's consistent leadership in cleanliness has already been recognised in the Swachh Survekshan 2024 rankings, where it earned a place in the newly created Super Clean League category of India's top-performing cities. The Recyclothon initiative, undertaken jointly by NMMC, Project Mumbai, and Mindspace REIT, marks a decisive step towards a cleaner, plastic-free, and environmentally sustainable Navi Mumbai.
Through the collaborative efforts of NMMC, Project Mumbai, and Mindspace REIT, the Recyclothon represents a significant stride towards a plastic-free and eco-conscious Navi Mumbai. By integrating citizen participation, corporate responsibility, and innovative recycling methods, the initiative is poised to redefine urban sustainability standards. Its focus on behavioural change, community engagement, and environmental accountability positions Navi Mumbai as a frontrunner in India's sustainable urban transformation, setting a benchmark for other municipalities to emulate.
