The Chennai One mobility app, launched by the Chennai Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (CUMTA), is preparing to include INR 1,000 and INR 2,000 monthly commuter passes to simplify travel across the city. Despite strong initial adoption, commuters have requested better training for MTC staff to assist with app usage. The app already consolidates buses, suburban trains, MRTS lines, and metro services, offering real-time tracking, UPI payments, and QR code validation. Future plans include student and senior citizen passes, women's free bus service, smart parking, and optimized routes for differently-abled passengers.
The Chennai One mobility app, developed by the Chennai Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (CUMTA), is set to integrate INR 1,000 and INR 2,000 monthly commuter passes to make travel across Chennai smoother for regular passengers. Launched in late September 2025, the app consolidates Chennai's public transportation network, including 621 Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) bus routes, suburban and MRTS rail lines, and metro corridors, into a single platform. It allows commuters to track vehicles in real time, plan routes, purchase tickets via UPI, and use QR codes for easy boarding.
Within 24 hours of its release, the app recorded 130,000 downloads and 4,394 ticket bookings. Currently, the number of downloads has crossed 350,000, with over 15,000 tickets booked. Bus rides account for 53% of bookings, suburban and MRTS trains 23%, and metro rides 19%. Developed at a cost of INR 8 crore, the app represents a key effort to modernize Chennai's public transport, though officials acknowledge some challenges, including QR code tampering and users unfamiliar with digital ticketing.
CUMTA officials have highlighted the need for MTC staff training to assist commuters in using the app efficiently. Passengers have requested hands-on support at bus stops and stations, which the authorities are planning to address in the coming months. Future upgrades for the app include student and senior citizen passes, integration of women's free bus travel, smart parking systems, and tracking travel patterns of differently-abled commuters to optimize low-floor bus routes.
