The Nagpur Smart and Sustainable City Development Corporation Limited (NSSCDCL) has approved the preparation of a Detailed Project Report (DPR) to enhance the city's CCTV surveillance system. The plan aims to identify areas with limited coverage, repair defunct cameras, and integrate new high-resolution cameras in key intersections, public spaces, and sensitive zones. With 3,686 cameras already installed under the Smart City initiative, many have stopped working due to poor maintenance. Kerala State Electronics Development Corporation Limited (Keltron) has been tasked with a five-year maintenance plan costing INR 70 crore.
The Nagpur Smart and Sustainable City Development Corporation Limited (NSSCDCL) has approved a Detailed Project Report (DPR) aimed at expanding and modernizing the city's CCTV surveillance network, including repairing cameras that have been non-functional for years. The decision was taken in a board meeting chaired by NSSCDCL Chairman and Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) Metropolitan Commissioner Sanjay Mukherjee. Municipal Commissioner Abhijeet Chaudhari and Additional Municipal Commissioner Vasumana Pant, also acting as CEO of NSSCDCL, attended the meeting.
The DPR will identify areas across Nagpur that currently lack sufficient surveillance coverage or have poor monitoring. It will assess locations for new cameras, calculate the required fibre optic network, and plan integration with the existing system. NSSCDCL intends to appoint a dedicated agency to prepare the DPR and execute the project once it receives approval.
Officials stated that the goal is to ensure that all major intersections, public spaces, and sensitive zones are fully monitored. Samvidhan Square, for example, currently has four cameras, but more advanced high-resolution cameras will be installed due to its heavy traffic and sensitivity. Similar upgrades are planned for other crowded areas with outdated or limited surveillance.
The original CCTV cameras, installed in 2017 under the Smart City Solutions Project by LT, were effective for crime monitoring and traffic control. Nagpur currently has 3,686 CCTV cameras under the Smart City initiative, but a large number stopped functioning because of poor maintenance and delayed repairs. To resolve this, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has tasked Kerala State Electronics Development Corporation Limited (Keltron) with maintaining and repairing the network. Keltron will oversee the system over the next five years at an estimated cost of INR 70 crore, covering hardware, software, and manpower to ensure continuous operation.
Once the DPR is completed, NSSCDCL will submit it to the state government to secure additional funding. The project also responds to repeated requests from city police highlighting areas outside the current surveillance network, which impacts crime detection and real-time monitoring. With the Smart City project term concluding in December 2025, NSSCDCL aims to expedite the process and strengthen Nagpur's urban security infrastructure. Officials believe that the expanded CCTV network will improve law enforcement efficiency, traffic management, and emergency response across the city.
