Gurgaon Metro Rail Limited (GMRL) has approved a 1.8 km metro spur line connecting the upcoming metro corridor directly to the Gurgaon railway station. This move aims to strengthen last-mile connectivity and reduce dependence on road transport for commuters. The project, estimated at INR 454 crore, was not part of the original plan but was recommended after a feasibility study. GMRL has also sanctioned 24 additional metro coaches and a separate depot to support the expanded network and rising ridership efficiently.
Gurgaon Metro Rail Limited (GMRL) has approved the construction of a 1.8 km-long metro spur line linking the upcoming metro corridor directly to the Gurgaon railway station. The decision, taken during a recent board meeting, aims to enhance last-mile connectivity for thousands of daily commuters. The spur line will branch out from Sector 5 and provide a direct metro-rail link, facilitating smoother travel between metro stations and the railway network.
The estimated cost of constructing the spur line is INR 454 crore. When the metro project was originally approved in June 2023, a direct connection to the railway station was not planned. Initially, commuters were expected to use a skywalk to access the station. However, a feasibility study conducted by RITES confirmed that a direct metro line is both technically viable and advantageous for commuters. Following this, a supplementary detailed project report (DPR) was submitted, and the board approved construction, subject to final government clearance.
Along with the spur line, GMRL has approved the procurement of 24 additional metro coaches, increasing the total fleet to 84. This expansion is intended to improve service frequency, with trains expected to run every five minutes during peak hours. The original plan had included 60 coaches, but the increase is necessary to manage growing ridership and ensure smooth operations.
GMRL has also sanctioned the construction of a dedicated depot for the new metro line. This depot will support the maintenance and operation of the expanded network and is expected to enhance overall efficiency and service reliability for commuters.
GMRL Managing Director Chandra Shekhar Khare recently inspected the ongoing works and emphasized the need to accelerate construction while ensuring adherence to safety and environmental standards. The development of the spur line, the additional coaches, and the new depot underscores GMRL's focus on improving urban mobility and providing efficient public transport solutions for Gurgaon residents.
