Synopsis

The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has stepped up its efforts to recover outstanding property taxes by identifying 149 properties for auction, targeting dues of INR 3.29 crore. This follows the recovery of INR 95.3 crore through tax warrants, yet total arrears exceed INR 938.7 crore. Zones like Mangalwari, Lakadganj, Satranjipura, Dhantoli, and Nehru Nagar account for most auctionable properties. NMC is prioritizing large commercial and institutional defaulters to enhance tax compliance and generate funds for critical projects, including the Nag River Pollution Abatement Project.

The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) is intensifying its property tax recovery drive by earmarking 149 properties for public auction to collect dues of INR 3.29 crore. This step follows the earlier recovery of INR 95.3 crore through the issuance of tax warrants, as the total property tax arrears in Nagpur have now exceeded INR 938.7 crore.

The property tax and assessment department had previously issued 10,042 warrants under Taxation Rule 42, covering outstanding dues of INR 95.31 crore. Of these, 9,659 warrants worth INR 91.96 crore were successfully served, while 383 warrants totaling INR 3.36 crore remain pending execution. From this process, INR 32.44 crore has already been recovered from 4,581 property owners. Despite these efforts, dues worth INR 59.51 crore from 5,078 cases are still under different stages of recovery.

In addition to warrants, 231 properties have been attached, valued at INR 2.47 crore. The focus is now on auctioning these attached properties under Taxation Rule 47(3). Among the 149 properties slated for auction, the Mangalwari zone leads with 67 properties valued at INR 1.39 crore, followed by Lakadganj with 29 properties worth INR 54.45 lakh, Satranjipura with 26 properties totaling INR 13.63 lakh, Dhantoli with 20 properties valued at INR 42.49 lakh, and Nehru Nagar with 7 properties worth INR 79.33 lakh. Other zones including Laxmi Nagar, Dharampeth, Hanuman Nagar, Gandhibagh, and Ashi Nagar currently have no auctionable properties, as recoveries there are mostly completed or under appeal.

Public auctions have already started in the Lakadganj zone, where five properties were recently sold. Officials confirmed that the auction drive will intensify in the coming days, especially targeting large commercial and institutional defaulters. They emphasized that the auction process will be monitored closely to maintain transparency and ensure maximum recovery before the end of the financial year.

The recovered funds are expected to support essential civic projects, notably the Nag River Pollution Abatement Project. By pursuing these aggressive recovery measures, including warrants and auctions, the NMC aims to improve tax compliance, bridge the gap between arrears and revenue, and ensure that resources are available for infrastructure and vital services across the city.
