Synopsis

Jio Payments Bank has won a contract to implement the FASTag ANPR-based MLFF toll system at two plazas on the Gurugram-Jaipur highway. This marks JPBL's entry into next-generation electronic tolling, allowing vehicles to pass without stopping. Awarded through a tender by IHMCL as part of India's pilot MLFF project, JPBL has secured two of five bids so far. Building on its existing FASTag operations at 11 plazas, the bank is set to strengthen its role in India's digital payments ecosystem linked to infrastructure modernization and improved vehicle mobility.

Jio Financial Services announced that its subsidiary, Jio Payments Bank (JPBL), has secured a contract to implement the FASTag Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR)-based Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) toll collection system at two toll plazas on the Gurugram-Jaipur highway. The MLFF system is a modern electronic tolling method that removes traditional toll booths, allowing vehicles to pay tolls without slowing down or stopping, which enhances efficiency and reduces congestion.

The two toll plazas, Shahjahanpur and Manoharpura, were awarded to JPBL through a tender issued by Indian Highways Management Company Ltd (IHMCL) as part of India's pilot MLFF project. Out of five MLFF project bids awarded so far, JPBL has successfully secured two, reflecting its competitive position and technical expertise in next-generation tolling solutions.

JPBL's success builds on its existing FASTag acquisition-based toll processing operations, which began earlier this year. Currently, the bank manages toll operations at 11 highway plazas as an acquirer bank. By acquiring toll management rights at these two MLFF projects, JPBL is positioned to play a pivotal role in India's digital payments ecosystem linked to infrastructure development, especially as the government focuses on modernizing highways and improving vehicle mobility.

Vinod Easwaran, Managing Director and CEO of Jio Payments Bank, highlighted that expanding into the tolling ecosystem aligns with the bank's goal of digitizing everyday payments and creating scalable financial infrastructure. He added that leveraging Jio's digital capabilities enables the bank to actively contribute to India's evolving mobility ecosystem and support the integration of smart infrastructure across the country.

The pilot MLFF projects are part of a larger push by Indian authorities to modernize toll collection nationwide. By combining ANPR technology with FASTag, these projects aim to reduce waiting times, improve traffic flow, and increase transparency in toll collection. JPBL's involvement demonstrates the growing integration of financial services with infrastructure projects, reinforcing the trend toward a more connected and efficient digital economy.
