Google Cloud has announced a USD 15 billion investment to develop an artificial intelligence (AI) hub in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, reflecting strong demand for local AI and data solutions. The investment, to be developed over the next five years, will be Google?s largest in India so far. It will include a data-centre campus with gigawatt-scale compute capacity and will draw on engineering expertise from Google?s existing hubs in Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Pune. The new AI hub will also connect to a subsea cable landing in Visakhapatnam, enhancing network capacity on India?s eastern coast and strengthening the country?s overall digital backbone.
This large-scale initiative aligns with India?s increasing demand for domestic AI and cloud capabilities. Industry analysts believe the project will contribute to faster enterprise adoption of generative AI tools and greater participation from sectors like banking, manufacturing, and retail.
Google?s expansion follows similar large infrastructure investments by other global technology firms, highlighting India?s growing importance as a centre for AI research and development. The project also supports the country?s broader ambition to localise its data infrastructure and build a more resilient digital ecosystem.
