The Central Government has approved 1,000 electric buses for Pune under the PM E-DRIVE initiative, aimed at improving the city's public transport network and cutting emissions. Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Ltd. (PMPML), which currently operates about 2,000 buses 750 owned directly and the rest through contractors had submitted the proposal. Officials note that a fleet of at least 3,000 buses is needed to meet the city's growing demand. The approval follows persistent coordination between state and central authorities and complements the ongoing Pune Metro expansion.
The Central Government has given approval for Pune to acquire 1,000 electric buses under the PM E-DRIVE scheme, Union Minister Murlidhar Mohol said, highlighting that the move will expand PMPML's fleet, strengthen urban mobility, and reduce pollution. The approval was confirmed after Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Ltd. (PMPML) submitted the proposal and the Union Ministry of Heavy Industries reviewed and cleared it.
PMPML operates bus services across Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, and nearby areas under the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority. The undertaking currently has around 2,000 buses-750 owned directly and the rest managed by contractors. Officials have indicated that with rising commuter numbers, the fleet should reach a minimum of 3,000 buses to meet demand efficiently.
Mohol noted that he had been actively pursuing the proposal with both state and central governments. To ensure financial readiness, he requested the state Chief Minister to communicate with the Reserve Bank of India. PMPML then forwarded the proposal to the Ministry of Heavy Industries, after which he met the Minister in New Delhi to expedite approval.
Alongside the e?bus initiative, Pune's metro network continues to expand. Currently spanning 32 km, work is underway on the Shivajinagar-Hinjawadi line, with additional extensions already approved. Mohol emphasized that public transport improvements remain a priority alongside metro development. He confirmed that efforts are now focused on ensuring the early induction of the electric buses to enhance the city's transport capacity and sustainability.
This step reflects a significant investment in Pune's urban transport infrastructure, aiming to offer cleaner, more efficient commuting options. It is expected to ease pressure on the existing fleet and support the city's long-term mobility goals while aligning with broader green transport initiatives across India.
