A report revealed that out of 1,452 PGs in the BECC area, many operate without trade licences or fail to meet fire and hygiene standards. Health officers will act as nodal supervisors for zone-wise inspection teams, checking compliance with residential zoning rules under the Greater Bengaluru Authority Act, 2024. The drive aims to ensure safety, proper licencing, and responsible operation of shared-living establishments.

Bengaluru East City Corporation (BECC) has announced a comprehensive inspection drive targeting unauthorised paying guest accommodations (PGs) and hostels operating within its limits. The initiative, starting on 12?November, follows a recent report which flagged that out of 1,452 PGs in the BECC jurisdiction, a significant number were functioning without proper trade licences or meeting mandatory fire and hygiene standards. Officials highlighted that many of these establishments operate commercially in residential areas, which is prohibited under the Greater Bengaluru Authority Act, 2024.

Health officers have been designated as nodal supervisors to oversee inspection teams in each zone. These teams will verify if PGs and hostels comply with licensing requirements, safety standards, and residential zoning regulations. The inspection will also assess fire safety measures, sanitation, and hygiene practices to ensure the safety of residents and tenants.

Specific zones for inspections have been outlined. In the Mahadevapura area, Hoodi, Whitefield, and Marathahalli subdivisions are scheduled for checks. The KR?Puram zone, including Horamavu, KR?Puram, and HAL subdivisions, will also undergo scrutiny. BECC officials noted that the inspections could occur at short notice, urging owners to ensure all necessary permits, safety certifications, and hygiene measures are in place.

Past experiences in Bengaluru have shown that unauthorised PGs and hostels often lead to overcrowding, safety hazards, and disturbances in residential neighbourhoods. The enforcement under the Greater Bengaluru Authority Act, 2024, strengthens BECC's authority to act against non-compliant establishments and regulate commercial operations in residential areas.

The BECC emphasized that any establishment found operating without proper licenses or safety compliance will face strict action. Owners are expected to adhere to zoning rules, obtain trade licences, and maintain fire and hygiene standards to avoid penalties. The inspection drive reflects the city's commitment to ensuring public safety while promoting regulated operation of shared-living accommodations.
