The Bhendi Bazaar Redevelopment Project, driven by the Saifee Burhani Upliftment Trust (SBUT), has transformed one of Mumbai's most congested localities into a modern, child-friendly environment. Families who once lived in cramped, poorly ventilated homes now occupy spacious, well-lit apartments equipped with private bathrooms and modern facilities. The project has also introduced green spaces, recreational podiums, and widened streets, prioritising safety, walkability, and access to play areas. This large-scale initiative has redefined what urban childhood can look like safe, healthy, and full of opportunity.
The Bhendi Bazaar Redevelopment Project, spearheaded by the Saifee Burhani Upliftment Trust (SBUT), goes beyond rebuilding homes it redefines the meaning of safety and vibrancy for young residents in one of Mumbai's oldest neighbourhoods.
Previously, children in Bhendi Bazaar grew up in small 100 sq. ft. homes that lacked ventilation and shared toilets, offering little comfort or privacy. Under the redevelopment initiative, each family is now receiving modern 375 sq. ft. apartments designed with natural light, proper ventilation, and two private bathrooms. These improvements have provided a healthier and more nurturing environment for children to grow up in.
Each residential tower now features podium-level open spaces equipped with children's play zones, gardens, and seating areas. Around 700 trees and shrubs are being planted to transform the area into a greener and more breathable space. The development has replaced congested lanes with safe, open areas where children can play without fear, a stark contrast to the traffic-filled streets of the past.
The project also focuses on reimagining Bhendi Bazaar's streets to make them child-friendly. Narrow seven-metre roads are being expanded to eighteen metres, accommodating broader footpaths and pedestrian walkways. These changes make it safer for children to walk to school and navigate their surroundings. The wider passageways and well-designed open areas encourage social interaction and a sense of community, while nearby retail spaces ensure the streets remain active and secure.
SBUT's approach blends modern infrastructure with community-driven design. It ensures that families not only have safer homes but also access to open green zones, modern utilities, and inclusive public areas. The redevelopment has set a new benchmark for how densely populated urban areas can evolve while keeping the wellbeing of their youngest residents at the core.
