Synopsis

Security was tightened this week at railway stations across the Delhi-National Capital Region after a car explosion near the Red Fort metro area killed eight people and injured several others. The Railway Protection Force (RPF) and the Government Railway Police (GRP), working with the Northern Railway, reviewed and strengthened arrangements at major stations such as New Delhi, Old Delhi, Anand Vihar, Hazrat Nizamuddin and Ghaziabad. The measures include more personnel, dog squads, CCTV surveillance and ordered checks of suspicious individuals. Travellers were asked to stay calm and cooperate.

Following the car blast near the Red Fort metro area that resulted in eight fatalities and several injuries, security officials placed all railway stations in the Delhi-NCR region on high alert. The Northern Railway reported that security at key stations New Delhi, Old Delhi, Anand Vihar, Hazrat Nizamuddin and Ghaziabad had been reviewed and enhanced.

Station personnel and security staff were instructed to remain vigilant and increased deployments were made. According to Himanshu Upadhyay, Chief Public Relations Officer of Northern Railway, RPF officers were stationed at entry and exit gates and on platforms. Multiple dog squads were pressed into service to inspect luggage and station premises. The coordination between RPF and GRP was reinforced and CCTV monitoring of station areas and surrounding premises was expanded.

Individuals exhibiting unusual behaviour are being subjected to thorough screening and checks. Officials appealed to passengers to remain calm and to cooperate with the screening processes in place. These new steps build on earlier upgrades to station security following a deadly crowd-crush in February earlier this year at New Delhi station which killed 18 people and highlighted the need for enhanced crowd and security management.

The blast also triggered heightened alerts in other states and at other transport hubs. The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) issued a high alert for airports, metro stations and other major installations across India. States bordering Delhi were directed to tighten checks at sensitive sites, markets and stations as part of a nationwide precaution.
