Synopsis

The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has initiated an extensive post-monsoon cleanliness and dust control drive across the city. Under the direction of Municipal Commissioner Dr Kailash Shinde, five advanced dust suppression vehicles are operating continuously in three shifts, spraying treated water and cleaning major roads and footpaths. The initiative, carried out under the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP), aims to reduce airborne dust particles and improve overall air quality in Navi Mumbai.

Following the receding of monsoon rains, soil accumulated along roadsides has dried up, causing a rise in dust levels across Navi Mumbai. To address this, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has undertaken an intensive cleaning drive involving the removal of soil from roads and footpaths using brushes and flipper machines. This initiative is being implemented across all departments as instructed by Municipal Commissioner Dr Kailash Shinde.

As part of the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP), NMMC is deploying five state-of-the-art dust suppression vehicles to curb dust pollution. These vehicles are operating along key roads such as Thane Belapur Road, Amra Marg, the main roads within the AIDC area, and Palm Beach Marg. They are spraying purified, treated water from NMMC's modern sewage treatment plant to suppress airborne dust and clean the road surfaces.

The vehicles disperse fine sprays of water into the air, allowing dust particles to settle on the ground, which are then removed through the vehicle's brushing mechanism. Additionally, the vehicles lightly spray roadside and median trees to wash away accumulated dust and carbon residues.

These five vehicles are functioning around the clock in three shifts-7 am to 3 pm, 3 pm to 11 pm, and 11 pm to 7 am-with a detailed schedule prepared for each department outlining their operational routes. Cleaning activities are being carried out systematically in accordance with these schedules.

Through these sustained efforts, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation is actively working to enhance the city's air quality and cleanliness. The 24-hour operation of dust suppression vehicles plays a vital role in reducing PM10 and PM2.5 levels while maintaining cleaner roads, footpaths, and medians. By combining advanced equipment with efficient planning, NMMC continues its commitment to ensuring a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable urban environment for Navi Mumbai's residents.
